Wuhan has the plain terrain with monadnock of east-west direction in the center. Plum Mountain, Turtle Mountain, Snake Mountain, Hong Mountain, Xiaohong Mountain, Luojia Mountain, and Yujia Mountain, together with Mafang Mountain, Guizi Mountain, Fuhu Mountain, and Phoenix Mountain which are radiated in two wings, constitute the dragon terrain of Wuhan where gathers most important institutions of Wuhan. Yujia Mountain, Hong Mountain and Meizi Mountain by Moon Lake constitute the head, waist, and tail of the dragon.The flat plain area (39.25%) is on both sides of the Yangtze River, Hanjiang River in Wuhan City and around the lakes, the growing area of cotton and vegetables.The mound plain area (42.56%) is around the lakes and the transition zone between hills and plains, rich in rice and fish.The hill area (12.32%) is divided into 3 rows all covered by forests: The north row is in the north of Xinzhou District and Huangpi District; the middle row is across the city; the south row is located in Caidian District and the north of Jiangxia District.

 

The low mountain area (5.85%) is mainly located in Huangpi District and northeast Xinzhou District at an elevation of more than 200 meters to 500 meters. At the junction of Huangpi District and Xiaogan City, Shuangjian Peak is 873 meters above sea level, the highest in Wuhan.
Geological disasters: According to written records, there have been 31 over-magnitude-3 earthquakes in Wuhan and no quake is over magnitude 5. The city has been attacked by medium or strong extraterritorial earthquake 28 times. In 1996, Wuhan was listed by the State Council as one of 13 national earthquake monitoring and warning cities.
